Did you know one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was killed in a deadly duel with his political rival? Meet Button Gwinnett, a key Founding Father whose influence shaped early Georgia history, but whose life was cut short by a bullet. In this episode of Marked!, Maiya May travels to Lawrenceville, Georgia, to visit historical marker # 067-1. We dive deep into Gwinnett’s journey from a merchant to the eighth Governor of Georgia and a delegate to the Continental Congress. One of Georgia’s largest counties is named after him. But the legacy of Button Gwinnett is also tied to Georgia’s early colonial years, his journey from governor to Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence before meeting his end in a duel with his political rival, Lachlan McIntosh.
